The process of explosion welded clad metal plates can be described as follows: explosives, detonators, cladding and plates are installed on the ground. When the explosive placed above the cladding is detonated by the detonator, the explosive chemical reaction of the explosive accelerates over a period of time and propagates forward on the cladding at the detonation speed. With the advance of detonation wave and the rapid expansion of explosive products, most of the chemical energy of explosive is transformed into the kinetic energy of high-speed detonation wave and explosive products. Then a part of the kinetic energy is transferred to the cladding, which promotes the high-speed movement of the cladding like the substrate. While the air between the two plates is rapidly and completely discharged, the cladding and the base plate collide successively at the contact point. In this process, with the help of wave formation on the contact surface of two plates, a thin layer of metal undergoes intense plastic deformation due to inclined impact and tangential stress. In this process, 90%-95% of kinetic energy of cladding moving at high speed is converted into thermal energy by means of thermal effect of metal plastic deformation. Such a large amount of thermal energy will increase the temperature of the deformed metal under the condition of approximate adiabatic. When the secondary temperature reaches the melting point of the metal, a thin layer of deformed metal close to the interface will melt. The residual heat energy can also make some of the deformed metals recover and recrystallize, and increase the temperature of the whole bimetal.
